We are a family friendly, traditional style Taekwondo school, taking students from 3 years old upwards.
Self-Defence is very important to us. We believe that it is better to be armed with the knowledge and skills before you need it!
The Wabi-Sabi Academy is, in essence, about self -defence; but not, perhaps, in the way most people think of self-defence…
Our vision is to provide a place and the resources where we can be a community that educates, lifts, mentors and encourages us all to be healthy, balanced and compassionate people.
We promote long-term, sustainable, holistic health.
We will directly address issues that affect our community that relate to safety and self defence – not just kicking and punching, but so much more.
Our curriculum is honest, comprehensive and taught over time.
We do not only teach a sport. We teach martial arts. A way of being.
“tae” means “to strike or break with the foot”
“kwon” means “to strike or break with the fist”
“do” means “way”, “method”, or “art”
Taekwondo combines combat, self-defence, sport, exercise, meditation and philosophy.
In 1989, Taekwondo was claimed as the world’s most popular martial art in terms of number of practitioners and it has featured in the Olympics since 2000.There are two main branches of taekwondo “traditional taekwondo” (martial art) and “sport taekwondo” which is seen in the Olympics.
Taekwondo training is predominately kicking techniques but also includes blocking, punching, open-handed strikes, take-downs, throws, and joint locks as well as self-defense techniques.
A typical lesson can include:
Warm up – loosen joints, get muscles warm to avoid injury
Stretching – to increase flexibility
Cardiovascular work – get hearts pumping, to increase stamina
Strength work – to increase muscle strength
Drills – basic movements of taekwondo
Pad work – practice techniques against pads
No / semi contact sparring – non or light contact and controlled
One step sparring for more advanced students – show technique
