The Things you Need to Know

Physical Environment

  • Remove jewellry
  • Keep finger and toenails short and clean
  • Bare feet – keep your feet clean and in good condition
  • Outside of the Dojan, take your belt off
  • Only wear your Dobok to and from training
  • Read and learn the tenets

It is important that a taekwondo student to try to:

  • Be unselfish
  • Be kind to others
  • Be respectful
  • Not show off
  • Be proud of yourself
  • Work with others as part of a team
  • Be part of the community

Fellow Students

  • Help them
  • Be willing to learn
  • Respect their rank
  • Respect elders
  • Respect all genders equally
  • Bow to each other at the beginning and end of an exercise
  • Line up according to rank
  • If you are late or without your belt – train at the back, at the beginning and end of class.

Etiquette

  • When in class, only talk when necessary
  • Be polite at all times
  • Learn and use the correct titles for different people within the club
  • Only wear your Dobok when training (or travelling to and from training). Always take off your belt in public so as not to provoke confrontation
  • Show respect for the Dojan:
    • Put equipment away
    • Bow when you enter and leave the Dojan
    • Bow when a higher belt enters the Dojan
    • Put your shoes neatly next to the door
    • Food and drink are not allowed on the floor
    • Water bottles should be clearly named on the table
    • Always use polite language
  • Show respect for the Instructor:
    • Face away when sorting out your Dobok
    • Bow before and after you speak to them
    • Be on time
    • Listen carefully to instruction
    • It you are late, warm up quietly and wait to be invited to join in
    • Offer to help
    • Let them know if you are going to be absent
  • Show respect to yourself:
    • Seek harmony at home / work / school and in martial arts
    • Keep your dobok clean and in good condition
    • Learn in each class
    • Listen to your body
    • Warm up and cool down

Attitude

  • If you don’t understand, let us know (we can’t read minds)
  • Follow our rules and traditions
  • Make others welcome
  • Trust and respect others
  • Commit to repetition and discipline. Practice
  • Be resolved and determined
  • There is no, “I can’t”, you are just working on it, or haven’t mastered it yet

In class the Senior grade receives the first attack.
But outside the Dojan there is no first attack.

ONLY use what you learn for self defense!

Family and school come before training.

Be calm, dignified and humble!
